    The Case In Point

The Case In Point is a tool within your exponential toolbox that will help you to avoid the pitfalls of “learning”.

Figuring things out and recognizing things that may not be obvious to others but making them obvious to you, will grant you a huge advantage.

When we have a new, disruptive technology or industry it is extra important to have a tool that helps you to learn. This is because the rules aren’t clear so we have to figure out how it works.

As an example: crypto/blockchain isn’t fully adopted, so as this new technology is getting adopted, people will have to figure out how things work. The people that end up “figuring it out” (not necessarily how to do it) but just “figure it out” will have a massive advantage.

    Enemy: Domain Dependence

    Let’s look at some actions:

    • The action of sweating
    • The steps necessary for neurotransmission (brain sending signals)
    • Melting polar ice caps
    • Economic bubbles
    • Actions of the Federal Reserve
    • Increased gas prices leading to an increase in grocery prices

Poor problem solvers will categorize things into one domain.

    Biology Problems:

They would label these actions as biology problems.

    • The act of sweating.
    • The steps necessary for neurotransmission (brain sending signals).

    Economic Problems:

They would label these actions as economic problems.

    • Economic bubbles.
    • Actions of the Federal Reserve.
    • Increased gas prices leading to an increase in grocery prices

When you think of only categorizing actions in this way you fail to determine the deep structure. If you don’t know what the act of sweating is, then you won’t be able to figure out what is happening, why it’s doing this, or how you can prevent it, etc.

So if we look at some examples of the deep structure.

    Negative Feedback Loops:

    • The act of sweating. (Sweating cools the body so that sweating is no longer necessary.)
    • Actions of the Federal Reserve. (The Fed lowers interest rates to stimulate the economy, if the economy grows too quickly it raises rates to slow down growth.)

    Positive Feedback Loops:

    • Melting polar ice caps. (When ice caps melt they reflect less sunlight back into space, which warms the planet and causes more ice to melt.)
    • Economic bubbles. (Investors buy more believing the value will increase and as a result the value increases which leads to more buying.)

    Causal Chains:

The path of influence running from a root cause to a problem symptom.

    • Increased gas prices leading to an increase in grocery prices. (This is not so much an economic problem but it manifests as one. Once you understand what the root issue is you can start to figure out how to solve it.)

What Does This Have To Do With The Case In Point?

This is the strategy of learning how to see the underlying structure. We can break it down to 4 simple steps.

    1. Consume the content
    2. Reflect
    3. Journal
    4. Pay attention

If you’re in The Guardian Academy (TGA) we use this quote often:

Dopamine without effort will destroy a person

We use this quote and give a bunch of examples that relate to crypto, but a Case In Point would be:

Where else could I see this in my life?

Not in crypto (domain) but where else can I observe that dopamine without effort will have a negative impact?

We are taking the underlying principle and applying it to other areas in our life.

Here is an article from Wolf Den Wolf Pup #29 that demonstrates this idea of Case In Point very well.

    Case In Point Steps

Once you see a concept in a domain (ex health, finance, work, etc.) then reflect, journal, pay attention, and look for the underlying pattern in other areas of your life. Next sit down and write about it, narrate it, do what you want to share your experience.

What that now does is make you a phenomenal problem solver and less of a victim. You won’t fall prey to “news” and the kind of impact a “thing” has on a single domain because you’ll be able to figure out what the underlying deep structure is IF you’ve been practicing with these Case In Points.

    Share With Others

Of course as we always do in TGA, we encourage our members to be as helpful as they can. Once you’ve helped yourself, provided opportunities for yourself, removed suffering from yourself, and understand how the world works…Turn around and help others to do the same.

We encourage you to share your Case In Points.

You can do this via twitter, any of the social platforms you’re on, or honestly any medium you choose. The original author for “The Real Cost Of Dopamine” sent a google doc to us and it was so amazing we asked if we could publish it on our platform. Treat this as any other skill you wish to learn. It’s one thing to read about how to ride a bike. It’s an entirely different thing to actually be on one for the first time, but as you continue practicing and riding, that skill becomes a part of you.

See if you can condense your thoughts into a 6 word update (6WU) and leave it on our tweet below. By being able to condense your thoughts into 6 concise words it helps you to quickly figure out the main ideas. After posting, go through and read what others have wrote. You’ll probably end up picking up some gems from their take aways.

Also, if you have 7 minutes, you can watch through the video for Case In Point.
